Saving Energy and Money In Your Apartment

Apartment Living

Economists tend to worry about a future of possible energy deficiency that can affect individuals and the world equally. Individually, we are overcome by excessive energy bills, and energy conservation is of utmost significance as a world issue. Becoming energy efficient is not a task or necessity limited to homeowners. Apartment renters can also contribute to the movement in a number of ways by making very small changes to their everyday habits.

Living in Las Vegas is more affordable than you might think. Contact Ovation today to check out our many apartment options.

Lighting

One of the simplest changes an apartment renter can make is in their use of lighting. The minute action of turning off lights when they are not in use is the first step you can take. Basic awareness of the energy you use in your home is also the least costly change you can make. Leaving items running that are not in actual use is also another energy drainer.

Energy Star, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program that protects our climate by setting superior energy efficiency standards, offers various products and solutions through everyday energy-saving practices. Energy Star authorized lighting products can save more than $65 a year in energy costs. Energy Star approved compact fluorescent light bulbs deliver a high-quality light output that uses 75% less energy yet last 6–10 times longer than standard luminescent light bulbs.

The change in output and longevity saves money on energy bills as well as saving on the cost of continually replacing regular light bulbs.

Running Appliances

Computers, laptops, and other devices that sit on chargers or are plugged into outlets consume energy that is not necessary. Keeping computers and printers on surge protectors that are switched off when not in use and taking devices off their charges when they are fully powered up will save both energy and overall costs. Leaving batteries to charge for prolonged periods of time is also not good for the battery itself. It diminishes the quality and life of the battery, making it a win-win to form the habit of charging till full and unplugging.

Insulation

Insulating windows and doors keeps warm heated air in the home during the winter months and the air-conditioned cool air inside the home during the summer months. Insulation goes a long way in reducing the amount of energy it takes to heat or cool a home. Using natural resources also helps. During the winter months, open curtains and blinds to allow the sun to heat rooms during the day. In contrast, during summer months, keep outside lighting to a minimum to keep rooms cooler.

Other Options

Another small energy-efficient change includes making sure you have full loads when using dishwashers, washers, and dryers. Avoiding the operation of a dishwasher with only a few dishes and washing machines with less than a full load of clothes will go a long way. Also avoid over-drying clothes. In the hustle and bustle of busy life, we tend to set it and forget it. Dryers can run for extended amounts of time with dry clothes inside of them. Remember to set the dryer for approximate drying times. Reducing the time spent in the showers is also an energy-efficient tip.

There are many time- and cost-effective ways one can reduce the amount of unnecessary energy spent, saving both the environment and your budget.
