Throw pillows can add a decorative and luxurious touch to any room of your home, from the living room to the bedroom. However, the pillow covers are often made of delicate fabrics that need to be handled with care. It can be a challenge to maintain them in between cleanings. But not to worry. There are many safe ways to wash throw pillows and keep them looking beautiful.

How to Wash Throw Pillows in the Washing Machine

You can wash most types of throw pillows in the washing machine. Check the care label first to see if your pillow is machine washable. If it is, you’ll want to use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. You may also want to put your pillows in a mesh laundry bag to protect them from getting tangled up with other items in the wash. Once the cycle is finished, tumble dry your pillows on low heat or air dry them.

If the pillow has a removable cover, it’s best to remove the cover and wash it alone. Otherwise, the stuffing on the inside may become lumpy and uneven. If this happens, you can fluff it by hand, but you can also try putting it in the dryer with a tennis ball or two to beat and fluff it up more.

How to Wash Throw Pillows by Hand

If you have more delicate pillows or are just a little leery about throwing them in the washer, you can wash them by hand. Follow these steps:

1. Check the care label on your pillow to see what type of fabric it is made from. Depending on the material, you might want to use a different method to wash it, or you may need to take it to the dry cleaner.

2. If you can remove the cover, it’s best to wash it by itself to keep the stuffing intact.

3. Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent. Gently swish the pillow around in the water until it is evenly saturated.

4. Allow the pillow to soak for 10-15 minutes before draining the water and refilling the sink or tub with clean, lukewarm water. Swish the pillow around again to rinse away any soap residue.

5. To remove excess water, gently squeeze the pillow, moving towards the opening at its bottom. Don’t wring it, as this can cause damage to your pillow’s seams.

6. Lay the wet pillow out flat and allow it to air dry completely before putting its cover back on.

If your pillow has stuffing, you’ll need to take a few extra steps to clean it properly:

  • Remove the pillowcase and any other removable covers.
  • Fluff the pillow by hand or in the dryer on low heat.
  • Fill a sink or tub with lukewarm water and mild detergent.
  • Gently swish the pillow in the water, taking care not to agitate it too much.
  • Rinse well and repeat if necessary.
  • Squeeze out as much water as possible and dry in the dryer on low heat or air dry.

How to Wash Throw Pillows Without Removable Cover

Before washing, check the care label on your pillow to see what type of fabric it is made from. Depending on the material, you will want to choose your washing method carefully. You may need to take it to the dry cleaner.

If it is machine washable, follow the instructions for “How to wash throw pillows in the washing machine” above. However, if it indicates the pillow is “dry clean only,” there are still ways to clean it at home.

You can purchase dry cleaning solution online. Be sure to follow the directions for use. These solutions usually require application with a sponge or gentle brush. This is also an effective method for removing stains from any pillows without washing.

How to Spot Clean Throw Pillows

Whether your throw pillows are starting to look dingy or just need a quick refresh, spot cleaning is always the best place to start.

  • Mix 1⁄4 teaspoon of dish soap with one cup of warm water.

  • Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the mixture and blot the affected area.

  • Be sure to work from the outside of the stain inward so you don’t spread it further.

  • Rinse the area with another clean cloth dipped in plain water and blot dry.

  • Repeat as necessary until the stain is gone.

You can use dry cleaning solution on pillows that are not supposed to be washed in water.
