Are you planning a vacation soon? Or, do you travel for work often? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you may find that you need to pack a suitcase to take with you - especially when you’ll be gone for longer than a few days. While most people don’t consider packing to be a fun activity, there are ways to pack your suitcase to ensure that you have everything you need, protect the contents and maximize your space. Try a few of these tips help you pack a better suitcase.
Make a List
When you create a list, you can help avoid the dreaded situation of arriving at your destination and not having what you need. An excellent way to start a packing list is to work from the inside (socks and underwear) to the outside (jackets, umbrellas, toiletries). This will allow you to have an organized method of packing, and, hopefully, you’ll grab everything you need.
Then Edit Your List
Once you’ve created your list - edit it. Most people are notorious overpackers. They pack way too much stuff for the amount of time they’ll be gone. If you always tend to return home with a suitcase full of clothes that you never wore - editing is important. Think about items that can get multiple wears. Think about items that you’re packing “just in case. “ You may find that you can pare down what you are actually taking with you.
Choose Outfits from One Color Family
While you may want to pack all of your favorite outfits for your trip - they may end up consuming a large amount of space in your suitcase. You’ll find that each outfit might require certain shoes or accessories and then you’ll find that your suitcase is out of room. Instead, choose clothes from the same color family. This will allow you to easily mix and match outfits with shoes and accessories.
Pack Clothes You Can Layer
Another space saver is to pack clothes that you can layer. Tank tops and t-shirts can be worn alone, or layered with a sweater or sweatshirt if you need something to keep you warm. A few pieces of clothing that can be worn by themselves or with other things will go a long way in helping you pack effectively.
Roll Your Clothes
You’ve probably seen this packing “hack” forever - but do give it a try. Rolling your clothes can save space in your suitcase and when done correctly can limit wrinkles for certain fabrics.
Invest in Packing Cubes
If you want to take your packing a step further than rolling, invest in packing cubes. They can be compressed. They will keep you organized. And they will protect your clothes.
Always Carry-On Your Essentials
Lost luggage happens. It’s not a fun experience, but you should always be prepared for this event. Be sure to carry on a change of clothes and any essentials you may need, such as medications.
Separate Your Liquids
If you’ll be carrying liquids (medications, shampoos, etc.) be sure to separate them in your suitcase. Place them in a ziplock bag to avoid unforeseen accidents.
Wear Your Bulkiest Items
If you’re traveling someplace that will require a heavy jacket, wear it on the plane. You can easily take it off and place it in an overhead bin, and this will save space in your suitcase for other items.
Know Your Airline’s Baggage Policies
Be sure you check out your airline’s policies when it comes to luggage. Carry-on luggage may need to be a specific size and within a certain weight limit. The same will go for checked baggage.
